Pepper spray= fail

Ok so today we woke up to a freaking dog barking and some worker outside yelling.
Normal Belize day....

We tried to figure out how to get to Altun Ha, a Mayan Ruin that was close to Belize City.  We couldn't figure out the bus service and decided that we were just going to hang around the apartment and eat biscuits and gravy!  Sooo Yummy!

Me and Lauren laid down for a nap and that didn't happen for me because of all the racket outside on a Saturday afternoon!

So we woke up and I felt fat and wanted to go running, no one felt that way with me. (The thought crossed my mind that I could totally run alone on Princess Margret, the street we take to school everyday, in the day time.  I would never do it, but I really felt that safe.)  So I told Lauren and Whit that we should totally stop by the vendors in BTL Park (directly across from Hummingbird Elementary) for some lunch.  It would get us out of the apartment, get us some exercise, and get us some yummy, cheap food to eat!

So we walk there No problem.  We get some Burritos for $2 and then go sit down at a picnic table by the sea.  Some kid in a purple shirt comes up to us at the table and says, "Can me and two friends come eat lunch with you girls?"  We politely said no, which is something that we have to do everyday around here, so completely normal.   He leaves on his bike and goes and hangs out with his two friends right by the sea probably 100 yards from us.

We see a homeless man eating from a trashcan.  Lauren gives him her left overs and then we get up to go.  I am carrying a small purse that i bought specifically for Belize, small and plain black.

We notice these guys are behind us all three on their bikes.  We still don't think anything of it because they are just riding at a safe distance and we are on a busy street in broad daylight.  For some reason this time, I was not nervous at all.  Whitney said she had a bad feeling and wanted to call our taxi driver.  We decided not to because it usually takes him 10 minutes to get us and we were less than 5 minutes from our apartment.

So the bikers disappear, Wheeww we were safe.  2 minutes later they come off right next to us , but on the opposite side of the street.  We are getting closer to our street thinking, "Ok we are almost there. This street is busy and so is ours, we are ok."  Whit says that she has put her wallet in her bra.  So i think to do the same.  I take my wallet from my purse and slip it under my shirt.  I was going to do the same with my camera, but it is kind of big.  So I thought, "Elle you are being too much of a scaredy cat.  Get real what's really going to happen?"

Well one biker ditches off down a side street laughing like the joker from Batman.  That's when I started to worry.  I pulled up my landlords number on our Belize cellphone and had my hand on call and Lauren had her pepper spray out.  One of the two bikers left does a U-turn and is heading our way on our side of the street.  I really thought they were just trying to scare us or something and that he was going to just ride by, until he dropped his bike.

Things get kinda blurry for me from there.  I see him lift up his shirt and he has a gun tucked in his jeans.  I see him reach for Lauren's stuff and he says, "Give me everything you have!" several times in a mumbled voice.  She is struggling with him and I can see this because I am directly behind her.  She is trying to get her pepper spray to work, which is just spewing all over her hands rather than in the bad guys faces.  I am repeating, " Lauren give him your stuff." over and over again.  She finally does and at this time I am still holding my purse.
He sees me with the phone in my hand that I had called my landlord on and he says give me that and snatches is.  He also says, "Give me your purse." and I hand him my water bottle because I am in such shock.  He bats that away and goes for my purse.  I am sure I looked like a 4 year old getting her shirt changed, because he took my purse off of me while I stood there with my hands up.

They rode off down a side street and we just started screaming at cars driving by saying."We got robbed please help!!"  and one man stopped and gave us the phone and said it was calling the police.  I was hysteric and couldn't even talk.  I was crying and looking around trying to tell them where we were and there are no street signs so all I knew was that I was on Princess Margret.

A neighbor let us walk over to her house and sit down and talk to the police there and then my Landlords wife, a freaking godsent, came and picked us up and took us to the police station to give our statements.

Belize police= big waste of my time

We were there for 2 hours.  The purple shirt guy was no longer wearing a purple shirt.  Our stuff was already on the black market somewhere and our phone already had some weird woman answering it.

Needless to say we will never get that stuff back, but we have our lives.

Our landlord and his wife made us dinner and let us drink a corona while we were there to calm our nerves.  Our locks on the apartment have been changed and everything is safe.

It is so sad that one event like this can ruin our whole experience.  I wanted so bad to have such a great experience like this and some idiots who are too lazy to get a job can ruin all of that so fast!

So needless to say I will be back in GA tomorrow evening.  I plan to hang out with Evan and my fam whom I've missed terribly!  So since I will not be student teaching till next semester, I will have to find a job for now :(

ughhh what a day

Camera Cord HURRY UP

Thank goodness for my mom (and Jeff) for sending me my camera cord (and retainer :) ) in the mail on Monday!  Hopefully the states have something to do with the mail around here because I can't imagine the "Belize Time" that could go on with mail :(
So 6-10 business days from monday :)
This blog will have pictures and I won't be a snaggle tooth!

Belize City stinks (like literally smells terrible).  I guess in the first week I was too awestruck to notice the stench.  barf.  Everything will be smelling fine and you are walking along then all of a sudden you are struck with nasty wiff of fish, poop, dirty, yick.
I won't miss that when I'm home.

This week has really been pretty uneventful!
Teaching a bunch of crazy lovely 4-5 year olds to ready and write and to add and do clock.
I'm pretty sure their little minds aren't ready for it, but that's how it goes down here.

I have actually started lesson planning and have a few for next week.  I was planning on starting full time next week, but have instead decided to chat with evan and lay in bed instead of plan, so maybe next week :)

The school food here is amazing!  They have a homemade snake (sorry not the ..ssssss hissing snake) SNACK each day for the kids to purchase and it is $1 bz. So .50 cents US.  Pretty good deal for two soft tacos in corn tortillas!  (Jeff you would love the school food)

I can't wait to get my camera cord so I can show you guys my school!  My class is right in the front (where the founder of the school lives right above and hangs her laundry out to dry).  My The PreK, Nursery, and Kinder rooms are all in the front on the bottom floor of the house.
They all have screen doors and windows that are always open for air circulation.  There are like 4 or 5 fans in my room and no a/c.  It's so pretty. I can't wait to upload pics!

We ate out last night at the Smokey Mermaid.  They had 2 for one margaritas so we figured why not.  I got a margarita and it was so sweet I had to give it back :(  My food was wayyyyy over priced and not really that great!  I got Conk Steak.  (I'm trying to venture out down here and eat things I have never tried before)  The worst stomach ache of my life came after that conk steak.  Yuck!  Never again.

This weekend I think we are planning on some Mayan Ruins.  I think we are going to go to Altun Ha on Saturday early!  I don't really know what to expect, because I haven't read up on it at all.

Well for now there are only 49 more days till I get to see Evan and have a weekend away in the Cayes.

The next weekend my fam is coming down with a few friends and I can't wait to see them also!

All-in-all Belize is a beautiful place and I am having a lot of fun, but still missing Ga a lot (besides the cold)

Love

Go Slow

Caye Caulker is my favorite place so far.

It is the cutest little island and you can walk from one side to the other in ten minutes.  It is the best thing ever.  There is nothing more relaxing than not hearing or seeing any cars or having a care in the world other than what place to eat or what snorkel tour to pick.

Ok back it up a minute... School Friday was crazy!!  My kids are tattle tales and that is the one thing that drives me crazy!  WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF. I can't tell you how many times I have said that since I have been here.  I was very ready for a weekend away!
So Friday after school we come home and pack everything for the weekend in a backpack.  I love packing for the island.  I packed two bathing suits, two pairs of running shorts, a tank top, and a t-shirt.  So easy.  So we load up and go to the water taxi and that is always an adventure.
So there we saw a prisoner handcuffed in the front with a guard who is carrying a gun stuffed in his pants.  So the guard walks away and the prisoner guy starts unloading matches and sticking them in his socks and then rips up the match box and takes the parts of the box that lights the match and then stuffs those in his sock too!
So immediately I think, this guys is going to blow up our boat for sure.  Someone tell my family I love them, kiss Evan and Ziggy for me, cause I'm going to die for sure.  Then Lauren, Ms. CSI, was like, "OMG have you seen him take a drink out of his coke bottle?" and I was like, "NO!"  and she said calmly , "Well that could very well be gasoline."  Thanks Lauren that calms my nerves for me.  Well thank goodness he didn't blow up the boat and we all made it out alive!  Barely.
We get to Caye Caulker an hour late and because the taxi never leaves on time (shocker).  But it was pouring and pitch black.  So we are thinking that we will get off the boat and the golf cart taxis will be lined up to pick us up. NOPE. Not a soul.  And let me just tell you that we got off the water taxi and had no plans.  No reservations for a hotel or even an idea of where to stay!  So we started walking, hoping it was safer than Belize City. (which it was, so don't fret) We stopped and asked the police where Poncho's Villas were and they were right around the corner from the pier and they had a bolt lock, wifi, and ac, so we were sold.  We were soaking wet and were using our towels for ponchos.  So we shook off a little and then went to dinner.  Happy Lobster.  NEVER GO!  It was gross!  My fried fish had a head, eyes, tail, skin, fins, and bones. (barf).  So I made sure I asked the waiter if this was the fried fish and he assured me that it was. Bummer.  So I ate none of it and was just sad.  But we made it safely and I had a Lighthouse Lager to fill me up!

We woke up Saturday morning and it was cold and cloudy. (I swear I have been saying my prayers, being nice, doing good, tipping well.  SO why is the day we are going snorkeling the only nasty day in Caye Caulker in the past year?)
Oh well.  After a short scare that the snorkeling tour might not go out... it did.  We went snorkeling with Raggamuffin Tours which is a sailboat snorkeling tour that has full day and half day tours.  We chose the full day with three stops and it was $45 US!  Is that crazy or what.  3 snorkeling stops starting out at 10:30 am, water, OJ, fish sandwich, rum punch, snorkel and flippers, and a sunset sail ending at 5:00pm for $45 bucks!
First stop was the Coral Reef.  We saw lots of coral and many fish.  I learned to snorkel and dive down underwater.  I felt like a fish and I loved it.  Second stop  Shark Ray Alley.  We swam with feeding Nurse sharks and stingrays that were Huge!! I touched a shark and tons of them were just swimming underneath me!
The last stop was really long.  We swam out into the channel area. and it was like 40 or 50 ft deep.  We saw three spotted eagle rays, lots of fish, and then a turtle! It was awesome!
When Evan comes, we are definitely doing that again!

We finally got back to Belize City today and had to clean our rooms, bodies, and clothes!  We are happy to be back and I was actually a little home sick for my apartment bed!
All in all Caye Caulker weekend trip was a success!!

Sorry it was so long and boring with no pictures :(  but the camera and retainer are in the mail tomorrow!  So pictures to come soon!

Love :)

I'm Soooo white

drumroll please... finally the walk through!
Last night Lauren made the best dinner.  Its hard not eating having your mom serve you home cooked meals every night!  Finally something other than pizza!

Today was a normal day.  Woke up at 6:30 ish and moped around the apartment until I was about to be late and then scurried around like a chicken with its head cut off to get all of my stuff together for school.

I ate some Chinese donuts for breakfast this morning on the walk to school.  Then proceeded to eat a taco (corn tortilla, chicken, salsa, cheese and cilantro... delicious. And yes they eat tacos and corn torillas like we eat toast) and a chocolate/banana bar that my teacher brought me.  Hummingbird caters their lunch for the teachers and there are always 3 or 4 choices that you can choose from.  They are soo good and only cost $6bz or $3US.

I am soo grateful for all of the teachers, parents, and other staff at Hummingbird Elementary.  They always want to feed us.  They offer to drive us anywhere at anytime (and we have had multiple families tell us that they will take us where ever we need and they give us their numbers).  They are so awesome and couldn't be more welcoming!

I am super mad at myself for forgetting my camera charger! :(  Blogs are boring without pictures.

Evan is coming to visit me on March 17-21!  He loves me :) I can't wait.

I think my mom is coming right after that on the 23rd, but I don't really know.  So excited to have visitors!

Ok so for the funny story of the day.

Jahmur (pronounced Ja-More)  a little black boy comes up to me today and stays, "Teacher Elle, I think you have a bug bite"  and points to my arm.  I said,  "Yea, I think it was a mosquito."  He had this worried look on his face and said, " Oh well mosquitos suck out all of your blood.  Did the mosquito suck out all of your blood?  Is that why you are sooooo white?"

I almost fell over laughing!

Well tonight the plans are as usual.  All sit in our beds and play on the internet!  We were so deprived of internet, now thats all we do! :)

Until next time.... (probably tomorrow) Bye!!

Belizeeee and Belize Time

I'm here!!! I never thought the time would come that I actually was packing up and leaving for Belize!

It is everything I imagined and more!  I love it here!  The people are lovely, the weather is BEAUTIFUL, and we have a personal cab driver named Percy, who is at our doorstep within 5 minutes anytime of day!

Ok so there is the run down so far of what we have generally seen! There is so much to talk about since we have been here for a week, but it seems like I'd bore everyone if

So far....

  • we have gotten into our apartment (that has air conditioning)!!
  • found a few local grocery stores that have the american food we like for reasonable prices
  • started school and learned all of the kids names (they are crazy!  Example: Jahmur, Zaynah, Tiarra)
  • I have been teaching since the first Wednesday I was there!  My collaborating teacher is awesome!  The first day when we walked up to the school (let me add that the walk is over a mile!!) the front door was open and the teachers were standing in the front door and my teacher yelled, "Which one of these beautiful ladies is mine!"  Talk about feeling welcome.
  • we have been chased (not really chased) or scared by two mice scurrying down the front hallway of our apartment!  Ahh
  • I have been observed on my first lesson (today actually)
  • been to Caye Caulker (AMAZING... most amazing place I have ever been to in my life)
  • been to the Belize Zoo

  • Our daily struggle with figuring out how to divide things by three and then convert to US dollars!

Me and Lauren on the plane ride sitting first class!

Whitney enjoying the ride!
Mimosas in first class!

My mom was our flight attendant!

Arrived in Belize City

The guys loading up our van with our bags... all on top of the van! Ah!

This is us in Caye Caulker.  This little beach had crystal clear water and it was soooo pretty! I cannot wait to go back!

Internet has been the biggest pain in the behind ever!  It took a whole week to get it when it was supposed to get installed after 3 days!  The guys here are definitely running on Belize time and that time is pretty much whenever they feel like coming out!

These are howler monkeys!  haha

I love it here and feel completely safe with my walk to school and in my apartment!  So everyone can stop worrying!

I love you guys and will upload more pictures when I can (because SHOCKER I forgot my camera cord)  It wouldn't be a real trip if I remembered everything!

Love you guys and talk soon!

I have a video of me doing a walk through of my apartment, but it wont upload! Ill try tomorrow!
